5 March 2010
1/2006
Don was a talented musician and dancer, well known to folk dance
communities in southern California and beyond. A tireless performer,
he worked for years with the Aman Folk Ensemble, where he was a
director, dance soloist, and staff musician. He was particularly
active with Hungarian traditional music and dance, and played
frequently for tanchaz gatherings with his own band or accompanying
others. He was also a frequent participant at EEFC camps, where he
played music avidly with anyone who asked.
Most recently, Don provided kontra accompaniment to Laci Orban's
violin at the November 19th tanchaz in San Diego. Those of us who
were lucky enough to attend that one not only had a great time, but
were also filled with optimism for a continued collaboration that
promised to bring new life to Hungarian events throughout Southern
California.
His close friend Miamon Miller said of him, "In our corner of the
world, Don was a stand-out, a true example of the natively talented
musician and dancer, unafraid to try new things and be successful in
almost all of them. On top of that, for all those who were blessed to
know him on a broader level, he was a truly nice person with a gentle
spirit."
He is survived by his wife Beata and son Jason in Hungary, his father
in Texas, and his sister in Los Angeles.
All of us who knew him and played with him and danced with him will
miss him greatly.
With condolences to his family and friends.

FORRÁS Band with LÁSZLÓ ORBÁN
The Forrás Hungarian Folk Band was formed in 1997. Since then it has
grown to become a driving force in the Hungarian folk scene in North
America. The ensemble plays traditional village music from Central
Europe, and its members have regularly studied with master musicians
in Hungary and Transylvania. Forrás performances are both
entertaining and educational, because the players present the
traditional lifestyle of the peasant musician.
Forrás prides itself on the authenticity of its music. Their work
focuses on the acquisition, preservation and presentation of their
Hungarian music heritage. Forrás' repertoire includes music of
Hungarian, Romanian and Romany (Gypsy) origin played on stringed
instruments such as violin, a Transylvanian chord viola called the
kontra, and the double bass. Forrás also plays more unique
instruments such as the furulya (shepherd's flutes), duda (bagpipes)
and ütőgardon (percussive cello).
Originally hailing from Transylvania, LÁSZLÓ "LACI" ORBÁN is an
accomplished fiddler who has played throughout the country of
Romania. He then moved to Budapest where he quickly became a
performer for Hungary's preeminent professional group, the State Folk
Ensemble (Állami Népi Együttes). During his decade there, he also
accompanied many other ensembles throughout the country, establishing
himself as a diverse and talented musician. Now a resident of
Washington state, he has become the lead fiddler (prímás) for Forrás.
KÁRPÁTOK Hungarian Folk Ensemble was established in 1965 to
perpetuate traditional Hungarian dance and music. Under artistic
director ISTVÁN Z. SZABÓ, the group rehearses at the Magyarház
(Hungarian House) at 1975 W. Washington in Los Angeles. Kárpátok
performs regularly from San Diego in the South to the San Fernando
Valley North, with occasional tours. Kárpátok's major role within
the community is as service provider: teaching young Hungarians their
traditional songs and dances in a bilingual setting, socializing
immigrants who identify a new need to treasure their heritage, as
well as performing, hosting visiting folk dance/music groups,
participating in international festivals and private events. The
group (15-20 dancers) is composed of a mixture of immigrants, first-
and second-generation ethnic Hungarians, and individuals who have
discovered a passionate affiliation for the dances and music. The
Los Angeles Magyarház (Hungarian House) provides rehearsal space for
both Kárpátok and the BUZAVIRÁG children's group.

Fettuccini Alfredo
Pasta with Tomato Sauce
Grilled Yellowtail
